Musicologists have explored how Indian music relates to time, seasons and emotions. Assigning times of the day – early morning, noon, evening or night – to specific ragas is based on the idea that a raga appears to be at the height of its melodic beauty and majestic splendour at a particular time of the day or season or in evoking a particular emotion. Ragas played at different times of the day stimulate different moods and emotions. There are ragas which are suited to the early hours of the mornings – ragas that evoke serenity, spirituality and peace.
Musicologists were thus interested how musical notes affected or enhanced human behaviour. Music has the power to cure, to make one feel happy and uplifted, to be at peace and one with God.
Considerable research has gone into the beneficial effects of music. It appears that music positively affects even insentient beings. The soothing effect of morning ragas could thus put one on a serene and unflappable mood for the rest of the day!
