Hidden Telugu Composers and their invaluable contribution to classical music
I happened to listen to a lecture demonstration of a very senior artist from Chennai. The artist
asserts to that “It is of interest to researchers, and keen listeners of music, in the Telugu Desa,
in Andhra Pradesh, all of you know, the language is Telugu prevalent. Classical music vasts
of a language in Andhra Pradesh, nurtured in Tamilnadu and patronised by Maratha Kings. So
this was confluence of so many regions and languages”.
“Though Tyagaraja composed in Telugu, but lived in Tamilnadu all his life. The Tamil language
has a distinct carrier in the field of music. There have been Tamil composers in all these
periods. It is worthwhile noting that after Bhadrachala Ramadas, the number of composers in
Telugu of Telugu Land are very little. After the period of Tyagaraja, before even, all the
composers in Telugu were non_Telugu, example, Poochi Srinivasa Iyenger, Patnam
Subrahmanya Iyer have composed in Telugu, not even a single song in their mother tongue
Tamil. Similarly Mysore Vasudeva Char composed in Sanskrit and Telugu, not a single song in
his mother tongue Kannada”.
“I wanted to mention after Bhadrachala Ramadas, that is 300 years ago, we have not had
many Telugu composers, off course, Dr Balamurali Krishna is a solitary contributor but lived in
Tamilnadu. There is a big gap in Telugu composers. But in Tamil, there are several
composers, Papanasana Sivan, Neelakhanta Sivan, so many other Tamil composers to list”.
I am puzzled with the above lecture which prompted me to undertake research to ascertain
the accuracy, by reading, researching including discussing with several senior artists from the
united Andhra Pradesh, taking their help over a period of past eighteen months. I have found
there are indeed abundant ajnata composers as competent as Bhadrachala Ramadas (and
including other composers in Telugu) over the period of the past three hundred years.
In order to promote the hidden Telugu composers, and enlighten the current generation, in
particular youth, I have scheduled up to eight broadcasts of one hour duration, covering
several composers, with their versatility and their invaluable compositions to Carnatic
Classical Music. I am also collaborating with a couple of senior artists from the united Andhra
Pradesh in developing these radio programs commencing February 2018. I acknowledge
reading an article written by Mr Asohk Madhav from the United States of America which
provides limited information on this topic.
I am keen to receive feedback from our radio listeners with respect to the content, after
enjoying each in a special series of radio programs commencing 24 February 2018.
